Principal’s Message
Yaama everyone and welcome to 2024! I hope that everyone had a wonderful festive break and the new year has started well for everyone. I can’t believe that we’re back already! Some of you may (or may not) know that Danni and I are getting married this year in August. It’s been a busy time in the Welham-Gee household which has occupied a lot of our time while resting over the summer.
It has been a very settled start here at MPPS. It has been great walking around to every classroom seeing smiling faces and authentic learning happening right from day 1! It was particularly special seeing our littlest Kindergarten friends begin this week. Some tears were shed, but mostly smiles and a readiness for big school that I haven’t seen for some time.
I want to formally welcome Mr Hale and Mrs Gray to the Mannering Park community. Both are Central Coast locals and bring an abundance of experience with them. They have replaced Mrs Haines and Ms Fitzpatrick who I’m sure have been warmly welcomed into their new schools. We also welcome a new face, Ms China McInness as the new school counsellor for three days a fortnight.
This term will see the start of our new Cool Kids Anxiety program being run by a registered psychologist within the school. We ran this program successfully in 2021 and are proud to offer this program again to students who require additional assistance. Participants for the program are identified to the school, with places offered to parents or carers.
There is quite a lot happening this term. I urge all our parents, carers and families to read the newsletter every fortnight, check Facebook and log in to School Bytes as often as they can. School Bytes is especially important as that is where our new payment and online forms are. I also encourage you all to check out our new Family Portal on our school website. There you’ll find class handbooks and more!

LITERACY & NUMERACY NEWS
2024 has started with a bang at MPPS! All of our classes settled in beautifully and jumped straight into their teaching and learning programs.
While Kindergarten settle into their classrooms they are learning about school routines, identifying beginning sounds in words and counting with songs and movement. It’s so lovely to see their excitement at starting Big School.
Stage 1 are studying the beautiful texts ‘Welcome to Country’ and ‘I’m Australian Too’, exploring descriptive writing, Indigenous storytelling and publishing their personal stories. They have started new mathematics units involving exploration of numbers with concrete materials and rich problem solving tasks.
3-6 teachers have been busy over the break becoming familiar with, and planning to teach the new English Curriculum. This involves explicit teaching of reading, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and handwriting in literacy workshops, as well as five-weekly units focusing on understanding and responding to quality literature. For the first half of this term, Stage 2 are studying the text ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl and Stage 3 are studying ‘The Wild Robot’ by Peter Brown. I loved helping 3/4G to identify declarative sentences in their fluency passages earlier this week!
I am so impressed with the way the students have focused on their learning in 2024. Have a look at these photos – Mikayla and Zac already know all of their Year 2 sight words!

ATTENDANCE
is our attendance goal!

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age of 17 years. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the NSW Education and Standards Authority for home schooling.
Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Did you know that we have a WHIN Nurse?
Who? Kathie Barry (NSW Health)
What is it? Working across three schools (Gwandalan PS, Lake Munmorah PS and Mannering Park PS) full-time. The link between health and education ensuring that children in our schools are looked after. Recognition that for a child to learn and grow, they need to be holistically supported by health. The role is care based, helping families to liaise between health services and the school.
